1st Due Barn Fire

On Saturday October 25th, 2008 around 11:00 United Fire company along with Montrose EMS were dispatched for the report of the barn fire SR 29 south of Montrose. Call was a passer by on a cell phone reporting smoke coming from the barn. With the Chief being out of town with the tower for a funeral detail he quickly requested that Messhoppen be called for their aerial. United 12 (M.Hinds) marked on scene with smoke showing from the main area hayloft. United Engine 2 with 3, engine 6 with 2, and tanker 4 with 1, responded. United command then requested that a full second alarm be requested. United engine 2 arrived with fire now showing and placed the deck gun in service to slow the fire spread. United engine 6 dropped the 5" supply line and reverse laid back to to the hydrant near Ritz-tech on lower South Main St. Tanker 4 arrived and nursed it's load into engine 2. By this time the fire had spread through out the whole building. Crews then focused on protecting the milk house and grain bin on the "D" side of the structure. Mutual aid departments arrived and set up a fill and dump site as well as getting in the supply line as relay pumpers to boost pressure. at the height of the fire there were 6 master streams in service as well as two 1 3/4" hand lines. Crews remained on scene for the rest of the day doing overhaul. Departments on scene included Rush, Elk Lake, Springville, Meshoppen, Triton (Tunkhannock), Silver lake, Forest Lake, Hop Bottom, Harford, Nicholson. Snake Creek and N.E. Regional Birchardville Engine stood by at our station. We would like to thank the family members who brought food and water to the fire scene to keep the members going. There were no injuries reported and all of the animals were evacuated from the structure prior to our arrival. Units operated on scene until 19:30.
