Rescue Assist to Rush
On Sunday September 27th, 2009 United Fire was alerted with Rush Fire Department and Montrose E.M.S. for a 2 vehicle crash head-on with confirmed entrapment and vehicle on fire, on SR 267 3 miles south of Lawton. United rescue responded with a crew of 6. Rush firefighter D. Conboy was first to arrive to find 2 occupants entrapped in the front seat of a SUV, 3 more victims removed from the SUV by by standers and the driver of the second vehicle, that had been split in half, ejected with the back half of the vehicle on fire. Rush 11 (J. Conboy) assumed command requesting United rescue to expedite as well as requesting additional E.M.S. resources and Meshoppen rescue to respond. Rush units went to work folding the roof back and removing the drivers door. While the extrication was getting started crews were also working to get the fire under control and attending to the six patients. United Rescue arrived and set up the hydraulic tools to assist with pushing the dash to remove the trapped driver. Crews also set up a chain come along to pull the dash in the event we did not get enough displacement from the ram. the crew had the driver out with in 15 minuets from our arrival. 






Unfortunately the other trapped victim had succumbed to the injuries sustained as well as two other victims of the crash. The 3 other victims were transported to area trauma centers with serious injuries by Montrose and Meshoppen ambulances. Crews remained on scene providing assistance to the state police while they did the investigation. United had moved Hallstead rescue to out station while we operated on the crash. United rescue was released by command shortly after 21:00 hours. While the rescue operated on the crash United fire was also dispatched for a possible fire at the Susquehanna County prison on Ellsworth dr. In Bridgewater Twp. United 12 (M. Hinds) would have the command of a small electrical fire in the kitchen that was quickly controlled and the building ventilated.
