At 10:05 on Wednesday December 12th, 2009 United fire an Montrose E.M.S.
were alerted for a structure fire at 35 Chenango St. in Montrose Boro.
The communications were reporting multiple calls being received. As the
tower was checking responding with a crew of EMS was arriving reporting
a working fire heavy smoke showing. United Engine 2 responded with 2
behind the tower. With limited staffing and the report from EMS United
15 (M. Rosin) officer in the tower requested a second alarm be
transmitted. United tower arrived seconds later to find a 2 story wood
frame 4 unit apartment building with heavy smoke from all sides
confirming all occupants were out of the structure. United 15 assumed
the command and requested that the engine lay in. The tower crew
stretched an 1 3/4" line off the tower through the front of the
building. Interior crews encountered heavy fire at the top of the stairs
leading to division 2 with extension to the common attic. As the
interior crew were getting a k nock on the fire exterior crews began
exterior ventilation processes. A second hand line was also quickly
stretched. Crews got a quick knock on the fire on division 2 as
additional help was arriving and began opening up the attic space to
gain access to the fire. Due to the heavy involvement of the attic crews
were temporally removed from the structure so an exterior hit could be
made. once the fire was darken down some crews reentered the house to
begin overhaul. Crews remained on scene until about 14:30 with
assistance from Springville, Rush, Meshoppen, Silver Lake, Hallstead,
and snake creek standing by at our station. There were no injuries
reported but the home will not be salvageable and 8 people are left
homeless. At state police fire marshal was called to the scene and
determined the cause to be accidental.
