Carbon Monoxide Displaces Residences




Just after 05:30 on Wednesday January 20th, 2010 United fire was alerted for a smell of gas in a building with the report of smoke on the third floor at 15 1/2 Public Ave. in Montrose Boro. United 11 (P. Sprout) responded to the scene and as he was arriving communications was updating that they were receiving an activated fire alarm from ADT for that address. United tower and Engine 2 responded. United 11 found a strong smell of fuel and a smoke on all floors of the building. crews then went to work evacuating the residents from their apartments and well as searching for the source. Crews found the source of the problem to be traced back to a malfunctioning furnace in the basement of the building. Once the building was clear of occupants crews went back into the structure and found high levels of CO on all floors. Crews then began searching the adjacent buildings and metering for CO. trace amounts were found in the building to the north of the primary structure and that building was also evacuated as a precaution.  Command had the building owner notified and advised them to have a serviceman respond as soon as possible. Crews began to ventilate the building. EMA was notified due to the number of residences displaced and the red cross was requested to set up a shelter. Crews remained on scene for several hours ventilating the buildings. All units would return to service just before 10:30. there was 1 civilian injury reported and they were treated on scene by EMS.
