Severe Weather Keeps crew Working

Shortly Before 17:00 on Saturday May 8th, 2010 United fire was dispatched for two incidents in to boro for trees and wires down. The first being on Grow Ave. the second on Lake Ave. This in turn shut down both main north south routes through town. Traffic immediately became and issue as well as life safety.  Crews responded to both incidents and set up traffic to keep vehicles moving. As crews were getting set up communications was advising that they were taking multiple incidents involving trees and wires in our first due. The decision was made to set up a command post at our fire station. Command then requested Springville for assistance. Birchardville Engine 98 also started toward town to assist. Command had all members report to station and accountability was established. We were able to man the phone in the station to take non emergent calls to help with the load in the communication center. The Rescue was used as the command post due to the station also having no power. Crews handled over 15 separate incidents in the first due including and activated fire alarm on public Ave. United staffed all 7 pieces of apparatus for the duration of the event with over 25 members. Crews also had to set up generators to keep the station operational including providing hot food and beverage to our members and the staff working in the communication center. The command post was finally broken down around 00:00 with Penn-dot setting up barricades to keep Grow Ave. closed until morning when utilities could begin working on the major issue in that area. At the time of this report Grow Ave. is still closed and large area of our first due remain without some utilities.
