Dear Friends,

 For over 150 years the United Fire Company has stood ready to respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice.  We stand ready 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Over those years the services provided and the equipment needed for those services have increased.  Last year our department responded to 284 calls for service, approximately 100 more than we responded to 10 years ago.

 In these trying economic times it may not seem appropriate to appeal for your donation.  Despite the current economic situation, we still have obligations to meet, obligations that allow us to continue to provide the high level of service that we do.

 Municipal taxes collected cover only 33%, approximately, of our operating expenses.  We must make up the difference through fundraisers such as our breakfasts, dinners, July 4^th Pizza Stand, chicken barbeque at the Harford Fair, and this, our annual fund drive.

 We realize that many who have given in years past may not be able to give this year because of other obligations they must meet, and that those who are able to give this year may not be able to give as much as in previous years.

 Your donation to us, no matter how small, is still extremely important and we are very thankful for it.  For instance, a $5.00 donation buys two 9-volt batteries used to power the alarm on our self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) that sounds if a firefighter goes down.  These batteries are replaced yearly to ensure they are fresh.  With the department owning 26 SCBA’s it costs us $130.00 a year to replace these batteries.  A $5.00 donation from 26 donors defrays the cost of replacing these batteries and helps to keep our firefighters safe for another year.  While it may not seem like much, if all you are able to send is $5.00, your donation has enabled us to keep one firefighter safer for another year.

 We thank you for the tremendous support you as a community have shown us over the years.  We are always looking for volunteers.  We can use volunteers for emergency responses and we can use volunteers in support positions such as fund raisers and administrative functions.  Thank you for your continued support.
